Proverbs 4:24 - Lesson: Be Wise With Your Mouth

Proverbs 4:24
Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.

Be Wise With Your Mouth

Hooty the owl has been working at the Who's Who Wiseshop for many years and He's had a lot of people come through to buy this and that.  He has heard people talking about other people and he has heard people cursing and using God's name in vain.   It really makes him feel very sad because these things are not wise to do.  We all should know that what we say with our mouths matters, because it matters to God.  As a matter of a fact, God has told us in His word that we will be held accountable for every word we say and we will be held accountable for every word we do not say as well.

Through Solomon - God tells us in Proverbs 4: 24  - Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.

God does not want us hurting other people with our words by talking about others in a way that will harm them.  He does not want us using his name in a way that is unnecessary especially with curse words.  One of the ten commandments teaches us not to use the Lords name in vain.  He doesn't want us talking proudly or arrogantly in a way that exalts ourselves above God or others. In  Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.  What we say or don't say matters because it could cause harm to another person and we displease the Lord in either way of disobedience.

Though our memory verse just speaks of what we should put far from us, we know we need to replace words of perverseness and pride with words that are honest and courteous.  We should be thoughtful of others needs and to think before we talk.  God wants our mouth filled with praise and thankfulness towards Him and to also show thankfulness to others.  He does not want us walking about life complaining and grumbling.

Now we know that Hooty is just a pretend owl but there are people that hear the words you say wherever you go.  I'm sure there is someone out there like hooty who has heard things like people cursing or saying things that are harmful to others.  I know we all say things we are sorry for in life, but that's all the reason to keep our hearts right with the Lord and recalling what the bible says and listening to its instruction.

Now we know, that the Lord cares about what we say... There is one particular story in God's word that comes to my mind that speaks of something that was not said.  In the story of the lepers only one came back to thank the Lord out of nine that were healed.  God wants us to thank him and He wants us to thank others.  While I was thinking about this lesson.  I thought of some people who were very kind to us during the Christmas season who gave us an unexpected gift.  We have forgotten to thank them.  We are all human and sometimes we have things going on that we forget to do the right things.  It is never too late to say thank-you for the thoughtfulness of others.

God wants us to be honest and truthful people.  Now I know that sometimes we say things by mistake that may not be true..we are human and sometimes our memory fails us.  God wants us to be a person who is wise in what we share and what we don't share.  When a child is small you don't always tell them everything because they are too young to handle everything.  In this case it would be wise not to say everything.

God does not want us to be purposely telling lies.  He does not want us telling lies about other people or ourselves.  God will not bless a person who practices lying.  God blesses those that follow after the things of wisdom.

What we say or don't say effects other people and our relationship to God.  If you have been using your mouth in a way that displeases the Lord and continue to do so with no repentance then God will deal with you if you are truly his child.  God wants each of us to confess the sins of our lips to Him and choose with his help to lead a life of honesty and purity in what we say and what we live.

I conclude this morning's lesson with this verse :

Ephesians 4:29
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Dear Father, Help each one here today to confess the sin of our lips and help us be a person who is wise in how we use our mouth.  help us to be thoughtful and thankful in our speech.

Cause us to be conscious in our choice of words we use each day.   Help each one of us to understand that you will bless a person who blesses you with their lips but you will not bless a person who is continually using his lips for evil.   In Christ's name.  Amen

Lesson From Proverbs 4:20 - Be Wise With Your Ears - Restored August 12th, 2014

Proverbs 4:20
My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.

Be Wise With Your Ears

Hooty has been selling televisions at the Who's Who Wiseshop.  He has informed me that they will be selling computers and other electronics as well.  The wonderful thing about computers is that they can be used for so many good things, but at the same  time they are not good  because they can be very dangerous.  There's so many ideas that are corrupted and contrary to what the bible teaches.  There are sin traps all over the internet.  The devil wants your mind and knows how to get it too.  God has warned us about sin and it's awful consequences and has given us clear instruction in His Word how to keep ourselves safe and what we need to protect ourselves.  In the Proverb verses that we are learning from there is one part I want us to pay attention to during this lesson.

Proverbs 4:20-  Son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.

As children growing into what God wants you to be.  God has used Solomon to give you some wise advise.  Solomon is telling his Son to listen to him.  Listening means a few things.  Listen with your ears, listen with your heart and apply it to your life. Apply mean to put what you've listened too into action.  An example would be. If a dad said,  "Son make sure you get all of the trash into the trash can!"  The son would hear with his ears, he would think about it and then He would do it.  This would be the kind of listening God wants you to give Him.  The bible says in -

James 1:25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

In this verse we are promised a blessing for listening to the Word of God.  He wants us to listen with our ears and with our heart and live what we have heard.  Here's another example for you.  If your dad said, "Son make sure to get all the trash into the trash can!"  then you walked away hearing with your ears but put it off and forgot about it.  Then you would be a forgetful hearer.  God wants to bless us young people, but he will only bless us if we listen.

There are things God wants us to listen to and there are things He does not want us listening too. He definitely wants you to listen to Him but does not want you listening to anybody who would teach you differently than what He's taught you in His Word.

He doesn't want you listening to music that would fill your ears and heart  with things that will  impact how you live.  Every song has a message and that message can impact your life.   He doesn't want you listening to anyone who is teaching you to bow to an idol.  There are many false religions in the world with a message, but it is the wrong message to listen to.  He doesn't want you to listen to nasty dirty talk from other people and He defiantly don't want you laughing at it either.  Reading is a way of listening because it has a message for you.  Anything giving you a message that you know God hates, means you should hate it too. God doesn't want us listening to gossip because gossip hurts other people.  Even if it is true - God don't want us taking joy in others suffering.  God tells us if we get prideful we could fall into the same problems.

Young people we are living in a day that the world has become hard driven after our minds and our hearts.  Please be a good listener by listening to the right things and refusing anything contrary to what the bible teaches.

What you listen to can either bring a blessing to your life or a curse to your life.  God wants to bless you but in order to find his blessing you must first know him as your Savior, be committed to listen to his instruction for your life, by being a doer not a forgetful hearer.

Prayer:

Father God, Teach us to be the kind of listeners that you want us to be.  Help us to avoid listening to anything that will harm our heart or our relationship with you. Give us wisdom how to react in situations that require hearing things we know are harmful.  Place your shield over our hearts this week as we go about living life for you.
