Abigail the Peacemaker – Choosing Peace Over Anger

Sing it or Read it

Lesson Title
Abigail the Peacemaker – Choosing Peace Over Anger

Goal Summary**
Children will learn that being a peacemaker means choosing kindness and wisdom, even when others are angry or unfair. Through Abigail’s story, they’ll discover how God blesses those who bring peace and how they can do the same in their everyday lives.

---
Opening Story: “The Sandwich Surprise”**
* Mia was excited about lunch—she had packed her favorite sandwich. But when she opened her lunchbox, it was gone! Her friend Liam had taken it by mistake. Mia felt her face get hot. She wanted to yell, but then she remembered what her mom said: “Take a breath and choose peace.” So Emma walked over and said, “I think you grabbed my lunch by accident.” Liam looked surprised and said, “Oh no! I’m so sorry!” They ended up sharing the sandwich and laughing together. Mia felt proud—she had made peace instead of a fuss.*

---
Bible Story: Abigail Makes Peace - Read (1 Samuel 25)
Tell the story of Abigail, Nabal, and David in simple, engaging language. Emphasize:
- Nabal was rude and unkind to David.
- David got angry and planned to fight.
- Abigail stepped in with kindness, food, and wise words.
- Because of her, David calmed down and chose peace.
---

- **Optional Kids** as helpers or food bearers: Liam, Mia, Max, or Emma

---

**Narrator:**

---

**Scene 1 – David’s Camp**

(*David stands with soldiers, smiling and friendly.*)

**Narrator:**
David and his men were kind to Nabal’s shepherds. They protected them and asked for nothing in return. One day, David sent his men to ask for some food.

(*Soldiers approach Nabal with friendly waves.*)

---

**Scene 2 – Nabal’s House**

**Nabal:** (crossing arms)
Food? For you? Who do you think you are? Get lost!

(*Soldiers look shocked and walk away, sad.*)

---

**Scene 3 – David Gets Angry**

(*Soldiers return to David and explain.*)

**Soldier:**
David, Nabal insulted us! He said no to everything!

**David:** (furious)
What?! That’s it—we're going to teach him a lesson! Get your swords!

---

**Scene 4 – Abigail Steps In**

**Servant:** (running to Abigail)
My lady! David is angry and coming this way! Something bad might happen!

**Abigail:** (calm and brave)

---

**Scene 5 – On the Road**

**David:**
You are wise, Abigail. Thank you for stopping me. I feel peace in my heart again.

**Scene 6 – The Lesson**

**Narrator:**
Because of Abigail’s wisdom and kindness, David didn’t fight. She saved her family—and David's heart—from doing something wrong.

**All Together:**
*“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God!”* – Matthew 5:9

Print only

Let the children act out the story with simple props skit or puppets!

Memory Verse
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.”* – Matthew 5:9 KJV1611

Have the children repeat it with hand motions:
- “Blessed” – hands raised
- “Peacemakers” – hands over heart
- “Children of God” – arms wide like a hug

Game: “Peace Tag”**
One child is “Conflict.” When they tag someone, that person freezes. The only way to unfreeze them is for another child to come and say something kind or peaceful (e.g., “I forgive you,” “Let’s share,” “You can go first”). This teaches that peace spreads through kind words!

Object Craft: “Peace Baskets”**
**Supplies:** Small paper plates, yarn, markers, and cut-out paper “gifts” (bread, grapes, figs, etc.)

Print Only

Let kids decorate a “basket” like Abigail’s. On each paper food item, they write or draw something peaceful they can offer: a kind word, a hug, a prayer, a smile. Then they place the items in their basket to take home as a reminder to be peacemakers.

Coloring Page**

2 Devotions About David One for Younger One for Older

2 Peter 1:5-7, then 2 Peter 1:4, then 2 Peter 1:8-9

Devotion: David Stayed Close to God

David was a boy who loved God with all his heart. He wasn’t the biggest or the strongest, but he trusted God to help him—like when he faced the giant Goliath with just a sling and five stones! David sang songs to God while taking care of sheep and always tried to do what was right. Even when he became king, he remembered that God was the real King over everything.

But David made mistakes too. One day, he made a big mistake that made God sad. Do you know what David did? He told God he was sorry. He prayed with all his heart and asked God to forgive him. And God did! David knew that God still loved him. He didn’t give up—he kept loving and obeying God for the rest of his life.

David also wrote songs to thank God and tell others about Him. One of his songs said, “I want to live in God’s house all my life.” David didn’t mean a house with bricks—he meant he always wanted to be close to God. We can do that too—by praying, reading the Bible, and trusting Jesus.

Even though David wasn’t perfect, God still used him to do great things. That’s good news for us! If we mess up, we can talk to God, ask for forgiveness, and start again. Jesus came to forgive us and help us follow God with all our hearts. If you’ve never asked Jesus to be your Savior, today is a great day to say yes to Him!

---

**Prayer for the Class**

Dear God, or Dear Father
Thank You for loving us, even when we make mistakes. Thank You for David’s story that shows how You forgive and help us start again. Please help us be brave like David, loving like David, and quick to say “I’m sorry” when we do something wrong.

Jesus, we want You to be our best friend forever. Come into our hearts, forgive our sins, and help us stay close to You every day. Thank You for always loving us and never giving up on us.
In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen.

Devotion: David Continued in Faith

David was not perfect, but he was *persistent*—persistent in his love for God, his pursuit of truth, and his readiness to repent. From the quiet hillsides as a shepherd to the thundering courts of kingship, David kept one thing central: his heart belonged to the Lord. Whether he was defeating Goliath with childlike faith, or dancing before the Ark in unashamed worship, David’s life reflected a man deeply rooted in reverence for God. His actions shouted what his psalms sang: “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.”

Even when David fell—when sin clouded his judgment and stained his legacy—he did not hide. He ran to the only One who could cleanse him. Psalm 51 is a raw confession of a man who knew his failure but trusted in God's mercy. “Create in me a clean heart, O God,” he cried. That prayer, soaked in tears, echoed into the heart of heaven—and God answered. What sets David apart is not a flawless record, but a faith that always found its way home.

David remained faithful in seeking God’s will, even when it cost him. He refused to harm Saul, honored his covenant with Jonathan, and prepared generously for a Temple he would never build. He was a king, yes—but first, he was a worshiper. A man who longed to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of his life. His desire wasn’t for prestige, but for presence—the presence of God.

And through it all, we see a shadow of something greater. David’s story points us forward to the Son of David, Christ Jesus—who would not just rule with justice but redeem with grace. Jesus is the faithful One who never sinned yet bore the weight of ours on the cross. And just like David, when we come broken and honest before God, we find not judgment, but mercy that restores.

**Prayer**

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the life of David—a man after Your own heart. Though he stumbled, You never let go of him. May we learn from his example: to worship passionately, to seek You daily, and to repent quickly when we fall. Lord, let our lives reflect a devotion not just in word, but in faith-filled action.

For every heart in this room, I pray—draw us closer to You. Remind us that faithfulness doesn’t mean perfection, but persistence in pursuing You with honesty and humility. As David sang of Your steadfast love, may we also rejoice in Your forgiveness and walk in Your grace.

And Lord, if there are any here who have never surrendered their hearts to Jesus, I pray they hear Your invitation. Christ died not for the righteous, but for the broken—for those willing to say, "I need You." So today, may someone open their heart to You, Jesus, and receive the gift of salvation, forgiveness, and new life.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

David and Saul: A Story of Faith and Virtue

The sun was setting over the Judean hills as  David crouched behind a rocky ledge. His men whispered excitedly—**King Saul** was just a few feet away, completely unaware of their presence.

Saul had been hunting David for months, chasing him through the wilderness, determined to **kill** him. And now, here he was—alone, vulnerable, within David’s grasp.

David’s men urged him, **“This is your chance! Strike him down, and the throne is yours!”**

David’s heart pounded. He had every reason to **end Saul’s reign**—Saul had tried to kill him, had driven him into exile, had made his life miserable. But David knew that **faith is more than just believing—it’s living out God’s truth.

📖  2 Peter 1:5 (KJV 1611) – “And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge...”

David had **faith** in God’s plan. But would he choose **virtue**—doing what was right—even when revenge seemed justified?

---

Virtue: Choosing Righteousness Over Revenge

David **crept forward**, his sword in hand. But instead of striking Saul down, he **cut off a piece of his robe**—a sign that he **could** have killed him but **chose mercy instead**.

📖 **2 Peter 1:5 (KJV 1611)** – *“Add to your faith virtue...”*

Saul left the cave, unaware. But then, David **stepped out** and called after him.

*"My lord the king!"* David shouted. *"See, I could have killed you, but I did not. Why do you hunt me? I have done you no wrong!"*

Saul **wept**. He realized David had **acted with virtue**, choosing righteousness over revenge.

---

Knowledge: Understanding God's Plan

David knew that **God had anointed him to be king**, but he also understood that **God’s timing** was perfect. He didn’t need to **force** his way to the throne—he needed to **trust**.

📖 **2 Peter 1:5 (KJV 1611)** – *“And to virtue knowledge...”*

Instead of taking matters into his own hands, David **waited** for God to fulfill His promise.

---

Temperance: Controlling His Emotions

David had every reason to be **angry**. Saul had tried to kill him multiple times. But instead of **acting on impulse**, David **controlled his emotions**.

📖 2 Peter 1:6 (KJV 1611) – “And to knowledge temperance...”

He didn’t let **fear, frustration, or pride** dictate his actions. He chose **self-control**, trusting that **God’s justice** was greater than his own.

---

Patience: Waiting on God's Timing

David had been **anointed as king** years earlier, yet he was still **hiding in caves**, running for his life. It would have been **easy** to take the throne by force.

But David understood that **patience** was part of faith.

📖  2 Peter 1:6 (KJV 1611)  –  “And to temperance patience...”

Instead of rushing ahead, he **waited** for God to establish him as king **in the right time**.

---

Godliness: Honoring God's Will

David refused to **harm Saul**, even though Saul had wronged him. He respected that Saul was still **God’s anointed king**.

📖 **2 Peter 1:6 (KJV 1611)** – *“And to patience godliness...”*

David’s **godliness** was shown in his **respect for God’s authority**, even when it was difficult.

---

Brotherly Kindness & Charity: Showing Mercy

David had **every reason** to hate Saul. But instead, he showed **kindness** and **charity**, sparing his life and speaking to him with **respect**.

📖 **2 Peter 1:7 (KJV 1611)** – *“And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.”*

Even when Saul continued to **hunt him**, David never sought revenge. He **trusted God** to handle justice.

---

 Conclusion: A Legacy of Faith and Virtue

David’s story mirrors the **spiritual growth** described in  2 Peter 1:4-9

He trusted God when life was unfair.
He made righteous choices when tempted.
He sought wisdom and understanding.
He controlled his emotions.
He waited on God's timing.
He honored God’s authority.
And most of all—he showed love, kindness, and mercy.

God used **every trial** to shape David into **a man of faith and virtue**.

That same **process** is happening in *our* lives. Every struggle, every temptation, every painful moment—God is **building us** into something greater.

Let’s trust Him, grow in virtue, and allow our **faith to flourish**.

Prayer:

 Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the lessons of David’s virtue—his courage, faith, and trust in Your perfect timing. May we, like David, choose integrity in every moment, knowing You are our strength and shield.

Lord, we also lift up every heart seeking salvation. You offer the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ, and today, we open our hearts to You. If anyone here has yet to accept this precious gift, let them know that You love them, You call them, and You invite them into Your family.

We surrender to You, Lord. Cleanse our hearts, guide our paths, and lead us into a life of virtue, faith, and love. May we walk in Your truth every day.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Joseph Was Thrown Into Prison

Joseph Was Thrown into Prison

It’s been sooooo long since I left you hanging. Did you forget about me?  You know, the story of  "Joseph being accused of something he did not do."  He was thrown into prison.  I’m sure he was in shock and crying out to God in his heart as he was grabbed quickly, pushed about, and roughly tossed into an unknown atmosphere.  It was probably darker than normal there.  The truth is Joseph was alone in life, he had no friends.  He didn’t have family members there for him.  He had no one praying for him through his tears and his grief.  He didn’t have anyone but God.  He talked to God through his problems.  His father wasn’t praying for his safety, his father thought he was dead.  I’m sure Joseph thought of his little brother and his dad each night before he went to sleep.  I mean that would be the human thing to do.  There are several things Joseph did while he was in prison. He did his very best work.  I’m sure he learned new things every day.  He met new people each day.  He did not have a bad attitude.  If he struggled in his heart with bitterness, he took it to God in prayer.  Who knows what happened to him while he was in prison?  The bible does not tell us every detail of his stay.  We know one thing though he was there a long, long time.  He was completely forgotten.

He obviously wanted out of prison, because He mentions it to two people.  Joseph was talented in a very unusual way.  Joseph’s talent was rejected by his family when he was young.  However, He was believed by people who he knew in Egypt.  Once again just like David, Joseph was accused, by his family of being, prideful.  Rejection and violence were part of their youth because they were judged harshly.  Did that mean God wasn’t blessing them?  On the contrary, they were the very ones that had a leadership purpose.  God was preparing Joseph for a life of a leader.

God's been speaking to my heart about Joseph and what he might have gone through in prison.
I'm starting some more lessons about Joseph, starting tomorrow and the following weeks.

My God Was By My Side

My God Was By My Side

I sat upon the cool green grass;
I played my harp and praised.
The sheep were grazing in the field;
While watching ore I prayed.

I knew that God was blessing me;
I praised Him all day long.
Each time I boldly asked of Him;
He helped me to be strong.

I watched the fold so faithfully;
I would not let them stray.
I lead them by the waters calm;
I cared for them each day.

When danger came to threaten them;
My sling, I took in hand.
I slung a stone up in the air;
I bravely  took a stand.

God gave me strength to make a stand;
Even though I was small.
I knew God could do anything;
Anything at all.

No giants are giant enough;
When with Him we abide.
Greater is He that is in me;
My God was by my side.

 God gave me strength to make a stand;
Even though I was small.
I knew God could do anything;
Anything at all.

The Shepherd Loves His Sheep

Bible Images
The Shepherd Loves His Sheep

David was a shepherd over the sheep of His Father's flock.  He made sure they were safe and made sure they were cared for.  If a wolf came along to hurt one of them.  He would either kill it or run it off.  Shepherds, like David,  would sometimes use their staff to keep danger away.  Many times shepherds would use their staff to pull the sheep from harm or pull them to the place they needed to be.
David is known in scripture for His ability to cast stones with his leather sling.  He watched over the flock and He lead  them to green pastures to graze.  He would damn up a place within a brook so the waters would be still for them.  Sheep will not drink water from a moving source.  I see David sitting, leaning up against a tree, strumming His harp as he sang  praises unto the Lord.  I'm sure His singing brought comfort to the flock, surly they knew His voice.

If one of the sheep would wander away, he would search for it until He found it.  Each one of His father's sheep were important and valued.
Jesus, is our shepherd.  Jesus leads us and supplies our needs.  He doesn't want us to wander away from him.  Each one of us are important to him.  He wants us to follow him and live our lives for him.  There are things in the world that could pull us away from where we need to be.  Where do we need to be? Safe within His will for our lives.

Like the sheep, sometimes people wander away from God into some kind of sin.  Or they choose a life that just doesn't include God.  Either way it is called living a life of sin.  Even if the person is the sweetest most giving person in the whole wide world and does not fully trust Christ or does things without the right motivation, those works are counted as filthy rags to God.

David's father's sheep stayed within the safety of the flock.  If danger were near the flock, the shepherd would call out a warning signal and the flock would huddle together tightly.  The enemy of the sheep would go for the one straggling behind, the one outside the huddle.

The shepherd knows each one of His sheep by name and God knows each of us by name.  If one lamb was straggling behind.  I'm sure David would call to that one by name and offer His arms of safety.   He would not just sit by at let that one be torn to pieces by a fierce wolf.

Jesus is the Great Shepherd of our souls, of our lives and He laid down His life for us.    He is the comforter that lives within the heart of every believer.  He leads us and directs our paths.  Keeps us in the safety of His will  and empowers us in His arms of  His strength.

The bible speaks of a shepherd that left His 99 sheep in order to search for the one that wandered away.  He did not give up until He had that one lamb within His arms, carrying it back to the fold.

Do you know God loves us that way too. He calls to that wandering one, "come home to me."  He calls to people through the preaching of His Word.  He speaks to our hearts in a still small voice.  Just as a shepherd calls for his sheep.  He calls for you to follow Him, give your life to Him. Know , He gave his life for us at Calvary and paid our sin debt.    That we could become children of God.

Father God,  I pray for each one here , that you will speak to their hearts and help them understand the lesson today about your love for us as our Great Shepherd.  Thank you for being the Great Shepherd who watches over us daily as we live our lives.  Help us to live our lives pleasing to you and lead us within your will.  In Jesus Name I Pray This. Amen

1Peter 2:25
For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls

Matthew 18:12
How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray?

Matthew 18:13
And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray.

The Giant Nobody Would Fight

The Giant Nobody Would Fight

 1 Samuel 1:17
Today we are going to learn about a boy named David who stood up against a giant that nobody else would fight.  God sometimes uses someone we think could never be used by God.  God can use anyone he wants to use.  Even though David's brothers thought Him prideful,  God knew that David was a boy filled with faith and courage.

There was a war in Israel and the Philistines  were out to overtake their land.

"Goliath was a big ferocious man and was very scary.  He challenged any of the men of Israel to come out and fight to the death.  But none of the mighty men of Israel would go fight the giant.

Now David was the smallest of all His brothers and was too young to be part of Israel's army.  His day was filled with the peace of tending the sheep and playing His harp.  He praised God everyday with the songs He wrote.

Now there were times David had to deal with some big problems.  God loved David and God gave David extra strength -  more than a normal boy His age would have.  David was only around twelve years old when He had to fight a hungry lion.  The lion snatched one of His little lambs and David killed the lion with His bare hands and saved the lambs life.   Then one day a bear became a danger, a very bad bear, who wanted to kill Him, but David was empowered by God and killed the bear.  David was very brave and had great faith in what God would do.

David went to go check on His brothers and witnessed for himself the threatening of Goliath.  It angered David.  He said, " I will fight"!  But all his brothers mocked him and told him He was prideful.  David was brought before King Saul.  The King agreed to let David fight and dressed Him in heavy armor that was too big for Him.   He clanged around in the armor , but it was big and bulky.  He decided all He needed was His slingshot.  David must have been a pretty good shot.  He had plenty of time to practice out in the field while watching the sheep.

David went down to the brook , stuck his hand into the water and chose five smooth stones.  Then with bravery went to stand before the giant that no one else would fight.  Goliath vowed to feed him to the dogs and cried out many frightening  things trying to scare David and all of Israel.

David yelled with a loud voice, " How dare you, defile the armies of the living God!  I will defeat you this day in the name of the Lord!"  He put one stone in His sling and He slung it around and around.  The stone flew through the air and hit Goliath in the middle of His forehead so hard it dug into His head and He fell backwards with a loud thud to the dusty ground.   Then He stood upon the chest of Goliath and cut off His head. "
In life we sometimes have problems too big for us to handle.  Things that tire us from day to day.  Just like the taunting of Goliath.  It could be temptation, or homework that is overwhelming, a problem at home or some heartache we're dealing with.    There are so many things in life much bigger than we are, but with God's help we can face them with faith and courage.  David had determination and did not waver in His faith. He knew God was with Him and did not doubt what God could do.

 This verse comes to my mind as I think about David

Philippians 4:13   - I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Lord Jesus, help us to have unwavering faith like David and help us to defeat our problems with courage and determination.    In the power of your Holy Name.  Amen

Bible Poem ~ David

DAVID

Little David, shepherd boy,
Sleeping there beneath the stars -
You may not know it, yet, but God
Knows the wonder that you are!

Just because you had to fight
To save your flock from enemies,
You were strengthened, in your soul,
And did for God a mighty thing!

Little David, with his sling -
Goliath (great and mighty, tall,
Armored, and so highly trained)
Fell the hardest of them all!

Little David, now the King,
Still can play the harp and lyre,
Sing the songs of God on high,
With the Spirit’s mighty power!
