What Kind Of Root Is Growing In Your Heart? LESSON

What Kind Of Root Is Growing In Your Heart?
(Ephesians 4:26    Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:)

Good morning young people,

Today we are continuing our series of lessons about the power of God through His Spirit in us.   Our series began with the greatest Commandments "loving God with all our heart and loving others as Christ has loved us." I will be speaking about forgiveness today.  Forgiveness is vital in a Christian's walk with God, for a number of reasons.  We will be talking about some of those reasons this morning.

On the first page of your folder, You will find a prayer that we are going to pray together in unison.  By praying in unison you will learn how to pray and learn about the importance of unity.  Please let us pray in agreement as we seek God's blessing on each of us this morning and upon these lessons.

Heavenly Father,  We come before you with praise and thankfulness for your forgiveness towards us. Help us understand just how powerful forgiveness is in the life of your children.  Search our hearts today and speak to our hearts as we learn
how to honor you with our lives.  Give us the grace to do the things you teach us to do and help us to live in your power.  Give us wisdom as we trust you and seek to please you with our lives. I'm reminded of this verse, Lord, let it be a beacon as we look to you this morning. Ephesians  6:10 ¶  Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.   In the name of Christ Jesus,  We pray this, Amen

I would like to remind you, before we continue, Be sure to pay attention and take notes so that you will be prepared to answer some questions at the end of this lesson.  Be sure to keep all your notes from week to week until the conclusion of this series.  You will use those notes to prepare for our "BIG DAY BIBLE BEE".   Please do not interrupt with any questions until we are open for discussion.  Thank-you.

Around seven or eight years ago, I was working in my garden.  There were three or four huge bushes growing on the side of my house.  They were very tall and very full, they took up a lot of room.  The former owner of our home planted them there years and years before.  I decided I wanted to get rid of them.  I cut them down, that was quite a chore, but honestly, the hard work had just begun.  I started to dig up the first root.  I worked nearly all day on one root, digging with my shovel and chopping with an ax.  I cannot remember exactly how many days I worked on digging those roots. Each day,  I was exhausted after working in the heat, my hair was a mess, my face was red and my hands had blisters.  I was dirty from the top of my head to the tip of my toe.  I was on the last root, digging and chopping, I couldn't get the root loose, I was tired and wanted to quit, but I was so close to being done.  My husband offered a hand and we got the last bit of root out together.   I'm telling you this story because the Bible speaks of a root, a root that can grow into your heart.  Once it grows there, it's hard to get rid of.  The root will rob you of your joy and of your peace.  It will rob you of your youth and of your health.

Forgiveness is a choice and sometimes very hard to do.  It is something that requires great humility and dying to oneself.  It is obedience to God's will.
Usually, if you're mad at someone you don't want to forgive them.  It is a struggle to forgive them, but when you want your life to be blessed by God and you want God pleased with you, you're going to ask God to help you to forgive.  It may take years of asking God to help you forgive until you finally you do.  I can say that because it took me a long time to forgive some things from my childhood.  Not forgiving only hurts yourself it doesn't hurt the one that hurt you unless they happen to love you, then it hurts them.

Christ is within us if we know Christ as Saviour and we have the power to forgive things that are unforgivable.  We must not let our hearts become embittered.  If we do it hinders our walk with the Lord, our relationship with God suffers.  It grieves the Holy Spirit.
Forgiveness is something we have to do every single day that we live.   God tells us to be angry and sin not.  So what does that mean?  When does anger become sin?

There are a lot of injustices in life that make us angry, and justly so.  We should be angry at those things.  That's why we have law enforcement and laws to protect people.   Anger becomes sin when it starts taking control of us.  We can not go to bed angry lest it turns into a root of bitterness. When anger changes us and changes our relationships between people and with God, that's when it has taken hold.

I remember when my eldest daughter came home from school angry over something a teacher had done.  I told my daughter "you must forgive her, you can not stay angry."  She refused to forgive her.  I prayed with her, she still refused to forgive her.  It was bedtime
and again we talked about forgiveness.  I taught her about the verse in the bible that says not to let the sun go down on our wrath.  (Ephesians 4:26    Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:) She still refused. I wouldn't let her go to sleep until she realized how important it was not to go to bed angry.  We put a gift together for her teacher and I taught her to show her teacher love and to apologize for sticking her tongue out at her.  She finally agreed after hours.  I didn't want my daughter to grow up bitter but to fight against the temptation by showing love.  We prayed until she was ready to obey.  I was so proud of her, it took strength to show love to her teacher.

We are not to go to bed angry about this world, but rather praising the Lord.  Our eyes can't be on the wind and the waves, but upon the one that can calm the sea.  He is the one we need to keep our eyes upon, not upon the many sorrows of life.  He's the one that helps us do the impossible, He's the one who helps us fight the battles of this life.

Becoming bitter will make you old and sick and will hurt your own family.  I've had to cry out to God myself to help me forgive some things that have brought grief to my life.    Though we know these things, we are tested on them every time hurt or trouble comes along.  We must be dependant on God to overcome these obstacles.

The Bible compares a root to bitterness, anger, and resentment.  All of these are out shoots of bitterness.  If you think about it the root could be almost any sin that can get hold of your life.
What kind of root is growing in your heart?
Please, let us ask ourselves this question as we talk about "Forgiveness".

Hebrews 12:15
Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled

The Ten Commandments

Exodus 20:2-17
1  I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
13 Thou shalt not kill.
14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.
15 Thou shalt not steal.
16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

The Power Of Love - Lesson 1

Read This As A reading

Good morning young people,
Today is Valentine's Day and we are definitely going to keep it centered around the Great Love Of God. Let us begin our lesson today with a prayer of love to our heavenly Father.  On the first page of your folder, I have a prayer that we are going to pray together.  This prayer is to teach you how to pray and learn about the importance of unity.  These are both characteristics of love.  Please let us pray in agreement.

Father God,
We come into your presence with thankfulness for your love to us.  None of us deserve your love, none of us are good enough.  You are the one who loved us enough to come looking for us.  You were the one who loved us enough to die for our sins, You are the one who saves undeserving people and makes them good enough.   Father help us to love you with our whole heart, with our whole mind, with our whole soul.  Help us to be loving, forgiving people like you are.  Help us not to look back, to move forward into a renewed joy in your presence and in the power of your love.   Help us love others as you have loved us.   May you be honored and glorified as you speak to our hearts today.  We pray that if anyone here wants to be saved, we pray they will understand today,  just how much you love them.
In Christ Name, We pray this, Amen.

Before we go forward into teaching this lesson I have a couple of announcements to make.  Be sure to pay attention and take notes so that you will be prepared to answer some questions at the end of this lesson.  Be sure to keep all your notes from week to week until the conclusion of this series.  You will use those notes to prepare for our "BIG DAY BIBLE BEE".    There will be prizes though I have not made up my mind yet what the prizes will be.  Please do not interrupt with any questions until we are open for discussion.  Thank-you.
---
A few weeks ago I received a text from a friend, asking for prayer for a family that lost their 12-year-old daughter.  She died suddenly in the middle of the night with some kind of seizure.  A seizure is excessive and abnormal electrical disturbances in the brains activity.   I'm not sure when her parents found her dead.  How devastating to wake up in the morning, to find a son or daughter dead.  The girl's name was Natasha, I also have a daughter named Natasha.  The good thing about it though, they do not have to worry about where their child is now because she found salvation through Christ days prior to her death.  She was attending the "Good News Club".  She was lead to the Lord by a young lady there.  The parents will see their daughter again one day because she was gloriously saved before she died.  There was another salvation at Natasha's funeral.   Her twin sister was lead to the Lord by the Pastor's daughter, Sarah. Praise the Lord!

If you were standing up in the window of a burning building, as smoke fumes were filling your lungs and had no rescuer, you would most likely burn to death.  However, the greatest tragedy would be to die in your sins because then burning is forever.  When someone gives you the "Good News" of Christ, they are showing you the love of Christ.   Jesus is the rescuer asking you to jump into His arms of salvation to save you from the hell to come. This is an example I'm speaking of, that exemplifies Christ and salvation.

John 3:16 is the perfect verse as to why Christ came to earth in human form.  God didn't want anyone to die or (perish) in their sins.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

When we receive the gift of eternal life, we are accepting God's love for us and agreeing with Him that we are sinners in need of His cleansing power and His forgiveness. He paid for our sins on the cross.  He shed his blood for our sins, but it only applies when we believe unto righteousness.
Romans 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.

Once we have become born again (saved).  Christ lives within us and we should resist sin and submit to the teachings of Christ.  This is called being a follower of Christ.  It doesn't mean that we will live perfectly, because we are like a child growing stronger as time goes by.  I'm still growing in the Lord, and when you spend time in the Bible there's always something surprising even after reading something many times.  God seems to help you understand more as you spend time with Him.  I warn that you should never get to the place that you feel you are better than any other person, take heed lest ye fall.  When we are walking in the Lord we are to walk in the Spirit of love.  The Bible tells us that God is love.  So anything that does not exemplify God, is not love.

There are many attributes that we should be seeing in the life of a Christian if they are walking in the Spirit.  The Bible teaches us these traits. The Bible calls them the fruit of the Spirit.  If you are showing traits contrary to these, the Bible says you're walking in the flesh.

When we were at the first church, God put us in.  I tithed 10 % of whatever I made, I gave to missions.  The majority of the money I made went back into the church. We do the same now in our new church.   I kept very little for myself.  I gave much more than just my regular tithe and offerings. When we left from pastoring the church.  The church was debt free and had money in the bank.  They supported 22 missionaries.  It was our first church.  My husband did the same, we gave and we gave and we gave.  More than what was required.  Love gives and gives and gives some more. No one could ever say we did not love that little church.

This is the way God is to those that love Him.  He gives to us in so many ways. It might not be money He gives, it may be joy. It may not be friends, but it could be understanding. Sometimes He gives us something worth much more than anything this world has to offer.  One thing I can think of that I'm so thankful for is "When God forgives us, He treats us just as if we never sinned." God's love covers a multitude of sins.  I've always tried to show patience to people who are struggling. There are times that I have been deeply hurt by something and I didn't react as kindly as I normally do. I have felt very sorry for those times and it has caused me to be more patient and understanding to other people who are hurt.    We can overlook some things because we know God is still working on them as well.  We too should be careful not to repeat a matter and learn to overlook some things, for loves sake.  Pray for them instead of talking about them or criticizing them.  God is patient and longsuffering.

God has given us many examples of love in the parables, the "Good Samaritan" is among the greatest of them. (Starting In Luke 10:33)   In the story of the good Samaritan, we see people passing by to the other side of the road, ignoring the one who desperately needs help.  Maybe they didn't want to be bothered, or maybe they didn't like him because He was different.  It could have been they didn't want to get their hands dirty.  Maybe he had a different color skin.  Whatever it was if they could have helped they should have.  If it was a woman and a child that had no money, they most likely could not help.  Some people just cannot help.  However, the Bible speaks of people who past by that could have helped but didn't.  They knew he was hurt and they ignored him.
This reminds me of another passage of scripture found in Matthew, it is also a parable of the Lord.

Matthew  25:35 -46
- For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink.  When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee.
in? or naked, and clothed thee?  Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
For I was an hungered and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Now back to the good Samaritan. We see a man doctoring a stranger and going the extra mile. He traveled far to get him to a hospital and paid the price for his care and then went back to check on him.  This man traveled with a horse or camel for days.  It wasn't like today.  This man showed a stranger the love of God.

When people see the love of Christ in us, they most likely will listen to the gospel message.  If you are a child of God, through Christ, your life will shine forth the love of Christ.  God has given us an example of good works that will shine forth because of Christ in us.

I have to warn however there are many that do wonderful works in the name of the Lord, who have not the spirit of Christ.  They are very good people, but God looks at the heart. We cannot trust anything else other than Christ for salvation or we are not saved.
Matthew 7:21-23
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

There is power in the love of Christ, for many have trusted Christ because of the love they see through a true Christian.  I pray that we will shine forth good works that others will trust Christ.  God tells us without love we are just making a bunch of noise....

1Corithians 13:1
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels and have not charity, I become as a sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

God tells us to let our light shine, it is the light of His love and the light His truth.

Matthew 5:16
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

When we love God we will give to Him faithfully and happily.  We will serve Him and others with the good works of faith in the power of Christ and his love.

The greatest love of all is eternal love and eternal life, that is found in Christ alone.
This love is what brought Christ to us.  What made Him, come looking for us?
He didn't want us to die in our sins.  He came to save us from the Hell to come. Hell is waiting for all those that do not put their trust in Him, but the love of God says,
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

 1John 3:16
Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

Father God, I pray you will bless this lesson in the hearts of those listening. I pray you will be honored and glorified.  I pray you will open peoples eyes to your truth and your pure love. I pray they will trust you and understand that they need you. I pray that they will humble themselves and cry out to you today. I pray that we will understand the power of love through Christ.  Help us to be what we need to be, to please you with our lives.

In The Name of Christ Jesus, I pray this, Amen.

Staying True To God And His Love - Introductory Lesson

Tween And Up

Matthew 22:36 - 40
Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

 John 13:34
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love
one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

Opening Prayer:

Let Us Pray In Agreement

Father God, We come before you with praise, thank-you for your Great love with which
you have loved us.  Thank you for coming to this world, to save undeserving people like us.
You are the true light that shines in the heart of all those who believe.  Help each one here to learn
and retain the Truth of your Word.  Teach us how to love others and teach us how to love you.

In Christ, we pray this. Amen

Before we go forward into teaching this lesson I have a couple of announcements. Thank-you.

Staying True To God And His Love

1 Corinthians 13:13
And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

When the bible says charity it means to love.  We've heard it said the following way, many times.  And now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.  Love is so important that it involves the two greatest commandments.  The first and greatest commandment is to love God with our whole heart.  The second greatest commandment is to love others as God has loved us.

Valentine's day,  the way the world celebrates it really has nothing to do with God.  It encourages relationships between young people before it is really necessary.  Many times it may even lead to an unwanted pregnancy.  In this careless world, millions of babies have been slaughtered because of the whims of worldly love.   That's why I have taught children to make God their valentine.  The bible teaches us to love Him with our whole heart.  Young people are vulnerable and need to put a guard over their heart and life.  God has somebody for them, and running ahead of God can cause a young person a lot of pain and sorrow.  It is important to learn, that as Christians we need to wait on God's will and purpose, especially when you are young in search of a wife or husband.   We are living in a day that young people need to hear that God made one man and a one woman in the marriage establishment.   That establishment is God's will, any other set up of marriage is not biblical and is sinful in God's site.  God wants young people to avoid any other physical relationships before the day of marriage - with the one that God has for them.   This is not the first time I've talked to young people about these things.  Years ago, I set up a pro-life exhibit in our Junior II department, over 25 years ago and talked about kids keeping their lives pure before God and waiting on the right person for marriage.   They were able to learn how a baby was formed in the womb and were taught that the killing of babies is murder.  I've taught many kids throughout these years about this crime.  This is real, you wanna know what's real?  The heartbeat of a little baby - they say is not living.  When they say that, It is obviously a lie.  If its heart is beating it is living! If it is growing it is living!

Now after saying these things, that have to be mentioned these days, what does this have to do with love?
God tells us in His Word.  If we love Him, we will keep His commandments.
John 14:15 ¶ If ye love me, keep my commandments.
John 15:12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
Love is not killing innocent babies.  Love is not going against the marriage establishment that God has set up from the beginning.

Now if we have done these things, does that mean that God does not love you or me?  We will talk about this during the lesson as we go.

Valentine's day can be used in uniting the family and teaching others what real love is. That is our goal because many people today have been taught that love is something totally different than what the Bible teaches.

I've started this introduction, talking about the greatest of all the commandments. These two commandments involve all ten commandments.  By knowing the ten commandments we become aware of what sin is.  When we understand that we are sinners, is when we can truly understand the love of God.

Now that we have talked about the greatest commandments.  I would like to turn our focus upon one of the greatest prophets of scripture.  This may be very surprising to you that we would mention a Baptist as one of the greatest mentioned in scripture.  He is the only one mentioned in scripture as the greatest of prophets born among women. Believe it or not, the message that John the Baptist preached was a message of love.  John preached against unfaithfulness in the marriage relationship.  He preached repentance from all sinful lust.   He lived a life of sacrifice and he preached the truth in love and he was hated for it.  People hated John and spoke to him and about him with viperous tongues.  That's why John called them vipers, but in the same breath, He explained, that He was trying to tell them something very important. He wanted to tell them about Jesus.  John the Baptist introduced to the world the Greatest Love Of All.  A love that goes beyond all human reasoning, beyond all human understanding.  Jesus is the light in which we can see the love of God.

Not too long ago we celebrated Christmas and we sang the songs of Christ's birth, the birth of God's only begotten, Son.  There has never been a greater Valentine to people.  There has never been
a bigger, I Love You than the day God himself came down to earth.  He came to live among us and to die for us.  He came to provide salvation to all who believe. Jesus taught people how to love each other, how to be faithful and how to love God.

We also learn what love is not. love is not lust, love is not betrayal, love does not come easy, love is not selfish, love does not purposely hurt someone, love is never evil. love is not misleading,  The world's love is not God's kind of love.

In conclusion, I speak of Jesus, twelve years old, already very knowledgeable of scriptures, a tween,
in the synagogue teaching the teachers.  He was still under the authority of His parents.  He was becoming a leader.  He grew in favor with God and man.  He knew right from wrong and He knew the right kind of love.  He obeyed the authority of his parents and He loved them.  They knew when He was born that He was the Messiah and He would lead a different kind of life. I'm not sure why this Incident was mentioned in scripture out of everything Jesus did, but one of the things that came to my mind is that Jesus was missing for three days.  His parents sorrowed after him for three days. They searched for him for three days without any modern day technology. "They had to ask people, "Have you seen my Son?  Will you help us find him?   Jesus was without sin and is called the spotless lamb of God in scriptures.  So we know the reasons for this happening is to teach us something.  Maybe it was for more than one reason, one being parents who loved their child and sought after Him until they found him and to teach us that it was nearing the time that Jesus would certainly have to leave them to do the will of God the Father.  Joseph and Mary definitely loved Jesus and cared for him.

We've been given the example of love through Jesus.  The word of God teaches us what real love is and it also teaches us what empty love is.

Let us be true to God and his love.  If you as a Christian, have drifted into the world and its view of love, return now to your first love. God is merciful and will forgive.  Repentance is of the Lord, if you are willing, the Lord will restore you to a right heart and mind.   You know what?  God tells us, to restore such a one in the spirit of meekness.  We know then, that God's love seeks to restore those that have drifted away.  He does not throw his babies away.  He has never left you... you left him and he wants you back, just like the prodigals father who was so joyous to see his wayward son return home.

God is love and there is no greater love than His.

Father God, I pray that you will work a miracle of love in someone's heart today.  Someone who feels unlovable, Someone who needs to know your forgiveness.  I pray they will learn of your great, great love.  I pray Father, that you will use this introductory lesson in the heart of those listening. If anyone here has never trusted you as Saviour,  I pray you would open their heart today to understand your Word.  You are the Greatest Valentine Lord - There is No Greater Love  Than Yours.  Thank-You God, for loving us help us to love you more.  Bind Satan and his evil devices.

In Christ Jesus Name I Pray - Amen

 2 Corinthians 7:10
For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
Romans 2:4
Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
 Ephesians 2:4
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us
Luke 7:28
For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

Luke 2:43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
Luke 2:46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
