The Shepherd Loves His Sheep

Bible Images
The Shepherd Loves His Sheep

David was a shepherd over the sheep of His Father's flock.  He made sure they were safe and made sure they were cared for.  If a wolf came along to hurt one of them.  He would either kill it or run it off.  Shepherds, like David,  would sometimes use their staff to keep danger away.  Many times shepherds would use their staff to pull the sheep from harm or pull them to the place they needed to be.
David is known in scripture for His ability to cast stones with his leather sling.  He watched over the flock and He lead  them to green pastures to graze.  He would damn up a place within a brook so the waters would be still for them.  Sheep will not drink water from a moving source.  I see David sitting, leaning up against a tree, strumming His harp as he sang  praises unto the Lord.  I'm sure His singing brought comfort to the flock, surly they knew His voice.

If one of the sheep would wander away, he would search for it until He found it.  Each one of His father's sheep were important and valued.
Jesus, is our shepherd.  Jesus leads us and supplies our needs.  He doesn't want us to wander away from him.  Each one of us are important to him.  He wants us to follow him and live our lives for him.  There are things in the world that could pull us away from where we need to be.  Where do we need to be? Safe within His will for our lives.

Like the sheep, sometimes people wander away from God into some kind of sin.  Or they choose a life that just doesn't include God.  Either way it is called living a life of sin.  Even if the person is the sweetest most giving person in the whole wide world and does not fully trust Christ or does things without the right motivation, those works are counted as filthy rags to God.

David's father's sheep stayed within the safety of the flock.  If danger were near the flock, the shepherd would call out a warning signal and the flock would huddle together tightly.  The enemy of the sheep would go for the one straggling behind, the one outside the huddle.

The shepherd knows each one of His sheep by name and God knows each of us by name.  If one lamb was straggling behind.  I'm sure David would call to that one by name and offer His arms of safety.   He would not just sit by at let that one be torn to pieces by a fierce wolf.

Jesus is the Great Shepherd of our souls, of our lives and He laid down His life for us.    He is the comforter that lives within the heart of every believer.  He leads us and directs our paths.  Keeps us in the safety of His will  and empowers us in His arms of  His strength.

The bible speaks of a shepherd that left His 99 sheep in order to search for the one that wandered away.  He did not give up until He had that one lamb within His arms, carrying it back to the fold.

Do you know God loves us that way too. He calls to that wandering one, "come home to me."  He calls to people through the preaching of His Word.  He speaks to our hearts in a still small voice.  Just as a shepherd calls for his sheep.  He calls for you to follow Him, give your life to Him. Know , He gave his life for us at Calvary and paid our sin debt.    That we could become children of God.

Father God,  I pray for each one here , that you will speak to their hearts and help them understand the lesson today about your love for us as our Great Shepherd.  Thank you for being the Great Shepherd who watches over us daily as we live our lives.  Help us to live our lives pleasing to you and lead us within your will.  In Jesus Name I Pray This. Amen

1Peter 2:25
For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls

Matthew 18:12
How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray?

Matthew 18:13
And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray.
