Proverbs 4:21 and 4:23 - Lesson - Be Wise With Your Heart

Be Wise With Your Heart

Good morning young people,  we have been learning from the Proverbs in the Bible these past few weeks.  We have learned about why we should keep our eyes upon the things that are pleasing to the Lord. We have learned why we should be careful what or who we listen to and we have learned how we should be careful  with what we say with our mouths.

Hooty the owl has reminded me of our next couple verses from the Proverbs that we will be talking about today.  They both speak of our heart.  Our hearts need to be protected from the influences of sin.  This is one reason God has given us these verses  through King Solomon , who is teaching his Son some very wise things.

Proverbs 4:21 says:  Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
Proverbs 4:23 says:  Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

Solomon is teaching his son the things of wisdom.  He stresses to his son that these things need to be important to him and that they should never leave his mind.  They are to become part of his everyday life.  The whole book of Proverbs has been written with the purpose of teaching one how to make wise decisions and how to protect ourselves in a world that is prone to sin.  The only way his Son can keep them in the midst of his heart would be to  study and meditate on his father's teachings.  God has given us those teaching to study today so we too can keep them in the midst of our hearts.

When we refuse to please the Lord with our choices we leave our hearts open to evil influences.  Everything  we do throughout our  whole lives is impacted by what we have allowed into our hearts.

God wants us to fill our hearts with His teaching by memorizing and practicing his precepts.  He wants us to keep our hearts maintained.  We do this through prayer, memorization and meditation upon the Word of God.  Meditation is thinking about something very deeply and comparing  it with other scriptures.    If we notice anything in our hearts that is wrong, we need to take it to the Lord.   We need to confess it before the Lord and ask him to cleanse us from the sin that has hindered our walk with Him.

Solomon wants his son to study and be prepared to deal with the life he will have to face throughout his lifetime.  Solomon was a very good father because he had taken the time to not only  prepare his Son for the life he would live but he also took time to teach him how to face  the spiritual battle Christians have face day to day.

As you know we have learned that we should be careful in what we say, what we  listen to and what we see.  These are all gates to our heart.  We should not let anything that is dirty through the gates of our heart.  Sin is an enemy to our sound mind and a destroyer of happiness we have in the Lord.

God wants us to love him with all of our heart, with all our mind and all of our strength.  He does not want us to use our imaginations in an evil way, we know this because God had destroyed the whole earth with a flood in Noah's day, because their imaginations were on evil continually.

God wants to use us in a very special way but if we let our minds dwell on evil things he will not use us in the great way he wants to.    2 Chronicles 16:9  says: For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.  God wants to use you young people.  He has plans for you but if you choose to follow after the pleasures of this world, he will not use you and you will have lost God's most precious plan for you.

As we begin to pray look inside of your heart and ask yourself,  Have you been keeping your heart with all diligence,   Have you had bad thoughts about other people, or any hatefulness or unforgiveness.  Whatever it is young people get it right today.  Don't allow sin to grow in your heart because one day you may find that it has taken over your life.  Let's keep our heart's maintained in the sight of the Lord who sees even our thoughts.

Dear Father, thank-you for the wisdom of your Word.  Lord, if there be any evil way in our hearts, we ask that you would cleanse us that we may be mightily used by you.  Teach our young people how important it is to protect their hearts and lead a life pleasing to you.  I ask Father God that you would use these young people in a mighty way and you would place a shield of protection over their tender hearts. I pray if there is any young person that has not yet trusted you as Savior of their lives that you would open their hearts to your truth this morning.

In Christ name, Amen

Invitation.

Lessons
Proverbs  4:20-27

20 son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
24 Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.
25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.
27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.
