God Shows Himself Powerful

Through Our Circumstances

Through the Spirit of God.

God shows his power in our most troubled times.  There is an example in the Bible that I’ve often talked about.  It is the story of Paul and Silas in the prison. While in the city of Philippi, Paul and Silas were thrown into prison for preaching the Gospel of Christ.  It doesn’t talk much about the sorrowing of the people in their lives over them being apprehended for the cause of Christ.  We do know one thing they must have had a lot of people praying for them. Or did they? You would think Paul and Silas would be grumbling, but the Bible didn’t say they grumbled.  As we learn about this let us remember to pray for our missionaries.  Let us remember to pray for pastors all over America too.  They need our prayers.

There was a girl who followed Paul and Silas around.  She had an evil spirit.  The evil spirit grieved them.  Act 16:16   And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain, by soothsaying:  She repeatedly cried out day after day, saying, These, men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.  She did this many days, Paul became greatly grieved and commanded the evil spirit to leave the woman.  The evil spirit immediately obeyed and left the woman.

Now there were men that made money off the girl, because of the evil spirit.  They became angry at Paul and Silas because they couldn’t make money off of her soothsaying any longer.  So they decided to cause problems for Paul and Silas.  They brought Paul and Silas to the leaders of that city and accused them of causing problems throughout the city.

The leaders took their clothes from them and commanded that they beat them.   They hit them with whips, over and over.  They were thrown into prison and the jailor was commanded to keep a guard over them.

Even though Paul and Silas were doing what God wanted them to do (by giving the gospel.)  They suffered persecution.  The reason they ended up going through these terrible things was that someone was mad because of the money.  The men got mad over the money and that was when they decided to get even.

Sometimes people can use other people for money, and they become a slave to those people.  They don’t have any choice in the matter.  That woman was not paid anything even though they made money off of her.  Maybe she was following Paul and Silas because she wanted to be saved from the evil spirit and also the slavery those men put her under.

God used Paul to deliver her, by one command.  Paul had the power of the Holy Spirit upon him.  God showed himself great in the life of the young girl.  She was saved from slavery.  The devil was mad and showed himself through the actions of the men who loved money enough to enslave a young maiden.

Now Paul and Silas were sitting in a damp, dark prison.  They had open wounds on their bodies. They were hungry and thirsty.  They didn’t have any time to be afraid, they started praising and thanking the Lord.  They sang songs psalms of praise.  They were prepared in their hearts.  They had God’s word in their hearts.  They knew good songs to sing.

Young people you need to know the Bible, you need to know good songs of faith.  God used those things in their lives when they were hurt when they were persecuted.

Act 16:24 - 25 Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

Act 16:26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.

They sang praise and prayed to the Lord with all their heart and the power of God shook the jail and the walls came down and the jail doors were opened.  God has the power to save, God has the power to deliver.  God broke the chains of bondage from them.  God loves praise and it moves him if it is from a true heart of faith.  They didn’t have instruments- they just sang beautiful words to a tune.  It could have been out of tune for all we know.  God loved it so much he broke down those walls to save his servants.

The jailor was afraid he would get in trouble if anyone escaped.  Paul said, Don’t worry, we are all here.  Guess what?  The jailor believed in God and got saved.  God shows himself, powerful through our circumstances.

Acts 16:31 And Acts 16:30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house

The same is true for us today.

2Peter 3:9b .... but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.  God wants people to be saved.  He wants you to be saved and live your life for him.  God does not want anyone to go to hell, but that is what happens to those who die without him.

Father God, If there is anyone here that has not put their trust in you, that has not asked for you to save them.  I pray that you will open their hearts to you today.  Thank you so much that Jesus came to this earth to die for our sins.  Thank you so much that you arose from the dead.  Thank-you that you have the power to save anyone who wants to be saved.  Help each one here understand your love for them and that you want them to be saved.

In Christ Jesus's name, I pray this Amen.

We said it like this - They took the key and locked them up.

We made chains from colored paper and put a memory verse on one of the chains.

The chains are to remind the kids of the power of God.

Use a premade paper chain to demonstrate how easy

the metal chains broke when God broke them.

Acts 16:16 - 33 ¶
And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:  The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.
And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers,
And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,
And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.
And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.
And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:
Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.
And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.
And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.
Full But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.
Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,
And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.
And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.
And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go.
And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace.
But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out.
And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans.
And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city.

Lesson: The Hurt Heart

Prayer:
Song:
Scripture Verse:

 Matthew 18:32-33
Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him,
O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because
thou desiredst me: Shouldest not thou also have had compassion
on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?

The Hurt Heart

Let us start our class today by saying the pledge to the bible.  When we say the pledge we are making a promise to make (God's Word) what guides us in life through not only the best times of our lives but also the  darkest times in our lives.
In life we have many hurts.  It could be a hurt that is temporary or a hurt that lasts a lifetime.  The hurts that last a lifetime are the ones that get to the heart.  In the pledge we promise to hide God's Word in our heart.  We do this by memorizing and understanding scripture.  The reason we hide God's Word in our heart is because it is through the heart our choices are made.  Our choices are made by either how we feel, our circumstances or what we want.   If we are right with God,  they will be made by prayer and what we  are taught in scripture first.  God knows that the devil wants our heart.
The devil will tempt us at the times we our most vulnerable, the times our heart has been hurt, at one of the very darkest points of grief or discouragement.  In these times we must follow what we know is true.  in a time of confusion, we can decipher  the truth from the fiction of what we are feeling and also from other people around us.

A couple weeks ago I surprised our church family by entering the room wearing a sheriff's badge.  They all called me Sheriff Susan.   They were all curious about it, but nobody asked.  Then we dismissed to Sunday School.  I told them  a story I heard a long time ago.  I heard about a police officer that was shot at while he was on duty.  Something kept him from being killed, something unusual.  The bullet hit his badge.  The badge kept the bullet from hitting his heart.  So I told the kids the true story of how the officer was saved by his badge.  The bible tells us to wear a shield, it is not a police badge, but is the shield of faith.
We are saved by faith, by taking God at His word.  Being saved by faith is our protection from belonging to the devil. While living by faith and hiding God's Word in our hearts is our shield against the fiery darts of the devil.

Now Today:
I mentioned to them about the police officers that were killed checking out a 911 hang-up call.  They were shot and killed suddenly.  My husband knew one of them.  They grew up together, played football together and he attended our very small wedding 31 years ago.

We heard of another shooting which Pastor prayed over this morning.  A deadly school shooting in Florida where many died.  I think about the coach that blocked the bullets from killing some of the students.  I'm sure He was a really big guy - most coaches are.  These violent killings happened because of hate, because of anger, because someones heart was being managed by the devil himself.  The young men who killed these valiant men and many other innocent people - had something messed up in their hearts.  When it's young people doing the shooting, we must talk about it.

In sunday school,  I held my bible up over my heart and said..."Kids, the devil wants your heart and he wants it wounded. I'm not talking about your physical heart. I'm talking about your soul the very being of who you are.   He wants you to be bitter.  He wants you to stay angry. People will disappoint us, people could turn there backs on us, people you thought would always be there. but Jesus will never leave you nor forsake you.  There may not be anyone to cry to, no one to listen, but Jesus is your comforter, your shield your help in times of trouble.  The only defense we have as people against the fiery darts of satan is a Really Big shield.  I held the bible up over my heart and I pounded my hand on the Bible that covered my heart.  The Word Of God in our hearts mingled in faith blocks the fiery darts of the devil.  It won't allow Him to get to your heart.

Make Jesus the Biggest Valentine in your heart.  Love the Lord your God with all your heart.

The devil wants us miserable , unhappy and defeated as Christians, but Jesus tells us we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.  Jesus is in every heart that has accepted Him by faith.
God promises to be there for us through our troubles, through our tears.

One of the biggest temptations in time of hurt is to become vengeful, unforgiving and bitter.  It is through these troubled dark times we must not allow these things to destroy  our faith.  It is through these things we must apply the scripture to our heartbreak and let it heal us by faith.
God teaches us that we have no choice but to forgive because we ourselves have never once deserved forgiveness.  Now there are some things that just cannot go without circumstances, but God does not want your heart remaining angry, or bitter.  His desire is that you overcome, by faith, trusting Him through what could be your hardest moments of life.

Jesus gives us a parable in scripture to teach us why we must forgive:

Read The Memory Verse Again  - Underline the Parts They Need To Memorize
Matthew 18: 21-35

Talk about it as you read it.

Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?  Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.  And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents.  But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.  The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.  Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.
But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. {pence: the Roman penny is the eighth part of an ounce, which after five shillings the ounce is seven pence halfpenny; about fourteen cents}
And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.  And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.  So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.
Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me;  Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?  And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.

So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from the heart forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

Father God,  I ask in the name of your Son, Christ Jesus that you heal  our broken hearts this morning, that we may renew our strength  and continue in faith, which we need to protect our hearts from the fiery darts of Satan.  If there are any here rebellious, unbelieving, wounded or doubting-  work the work of faith in their hearts today  and renew a right spirit within us.  That we may continue to obey you in faith ... heal the hurting.  Praise your name for what you will do in our hearts as we trust you. If there is anyone here that has not trusted Christ as there personal Saviour.  Jesus will not refuse anyone who genuinely wants Him to be the Lord of their lives. Christ Jesus died for your sins and arose victorious that you may be forgiven and become his child.
