**Children's Treasures in My Treasure Box**

**Children's Treasures in My Treasure Box** I have a little treasure box, Not filled with gold or pearls, But shining gems more precious still, Than all the jewels in the world. A gem of kindness softly glows, When helping hands are near. A gem of love shines warm and bright, Bringing comfort, joy, and cheer. A gem of laughter sparkles high, Like sunlight on the sea. A gem of faith shines through the night, Reminding God cares for me. A gem of patience gleams so clear, When waiting with a smile. A gem of truth shines faithfully, And lights each step awhile. These precious gems within my box Grow brighter every day. For when I share them with others, Their beauty does not fade away. So I'll treasure every shining gem, And keep them close in view. For the greatest treasures God can give Are the loving things we do. Susan Barker Nikitenko 2026©MBPMRMNMPBKBANNABENGEORPASTO #3093

The Green Eyed Monster

The Green Eyed Monster - Jealousy is Ugly

 The Green Eyed Monster

Here are complete, thorough, and simple step-by-step directions to create your two-eyed monster puppet based on the reference photo provided, using gorgeous yarns available from Hobby Lobby.

Hobby Lobby Yarn & Supply Shopping List

To get that exact vibrant look with bulky, soft yarn, head to Hobby Lobby and pick up the following:

  • Main Body & Stripes: I Love This Yarn! or Hobby Lobby Yarn Bee Soft Secret (Bulky or worsted-weight held double for plushness).

    • Colors: "Key Lime" (Lime Green), "Amethyst" or "Purple" (Purple), and "Charcoal" (Dark Grey/Black).

  • Mouth Interior: "Soft Pink" for the back mouth background.

  • Teeth & Eye Whites: "White".

  • Crochet Hooks:

    • 6.5 mm (US K-10.5) hook for the body, head, arms, and legs.

    • 5.5 mm (US I-9) hook for the tight teeth and eyes.

  • Notions: Black safety eyes (approx. 25–30 mm), black felt for mouth lining, stiff plastic canvas sheets (for structural mouth plates), and polyester fiberfill.

Step 1: Making the Functional Moving Mouth

  1. Cut the Bases: Cut two wide, curved oval shapes out of your plastic canvas (matching the shape of an open mouth). Cut identical shapes out of black felt.

  2. Cover & Line: Glue or whipstitch the black felt onto the plastic canvas pieces to create a clean, comfortable interior for the upper and lower jaws.

  3. The Hinge: Place the two finished mouth plates flat against each other, matching the straight back edges. Use strong black thread to whipstitch the back edges together. This creates a flexible fabric hinge so your hand can open and close the mouth.

Step 2: Adding Teeth, Tongue, and Throat

  1. The Pink Throat Pocket: Using Soft Pink yarn, crochet a flat semi-circle oval and sew it inside the back of the lower and upper mouth plates to give depth to the mouth.

  2. The Pointy White Teeth: Using your smaller hook and White yarn, join to the outer rim of the mouth plate:

    • Tooth Stitch: Chain 3, slip stitch in 2nd chain from hook, single crochet in next chain, skip 2 stitches on the mouth plate, slip stitch into the next stitch. Repeat all the way around the lips to create a row of sharp, friendly triangular teeth.

  3. The Tongue: Crochet a small oval in Purple or Pink, lightly stuff it, and sew it flat onto the center of the bottom mouth plate.

Step 3: Crocheting the Body & Head

  1. Attach Yarn to Mouth: Join your Charcoal or Variegated yarn directly to the outer edge of the upper mouth plate.

  2. The Head Dome: Work single crochet stitches around the upper lip, increasing slightly to form a dome over the top. Switch to the Loop Stitch for the top 5–6 rows to create that thick, shaggy monster hair.

  3. The Body Cylinder: Working downward from the lower mouth plate, crochet in continuous round tubes, changing colors every few rows between Charcoal, Purple, and Lime Green to create the bold stripes.

  4. Crocodile Scale Skirt: For the lower portion of the body, work 4-dc shell Crocodile Stitches in alternating purple and green tiers to give the monster its textured, scaly bottom half. Leave the bottom/back open to insert your hand.

Step 4: Crafting the Two Eyes

  1. Eye Whites (Make 2): Using White yarn and a magic ring, work 6 sc. Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12). Round 3: (1 sc, inc) around (18). Fasten off.

  2. Pupils: Insert a large black safety eye through the exact center of each white circle and secure the backing washer firmly on the back.

  3. Heavy Eyelids: Using Lime Green yarn, crochet a small curved half-moon shape and sew it over the top edge of each eye to give your monster its expressive, friendly look.

  4. Placement: Sew both eyes securely onto the upper face just beneath the shaggy hair.

Step 5: Limbs & Final Assembly

  1. Arms & Fingers (Make 2): Crochet 3 small mini-tubes for fingers, join them at the base, and continue working upward in striped rounds to create long, floppy arms. Attach them to the upper sides of the body.

  2. Legs & Feet (Make 2): Crochet 3 toe tubes, join them, and work upward to form striped legs. Sew the legs to the bottom front inside of the scaly body so they hang down when held.

  3. Operation Check: Slide your hand inside the back opening—place your thumb in the bottom jaw pocket and your fingers in the top jaw pocket. Test your moving mouth puppet, ensure the teeth show clearly, and enjoy your creation!

    • Polyester fiberfill (stuffing)

    • Yarn needle & stitch markers

🟢 Part 1: The Head & Three-Eye Panel

Using Olive Green (MC)

  • Round 1: Start with a magic ring. 6 sc into ring. (6 sts)

  • Round 2: inc in each st around. (12 sts)

  • Round 3: *sc 1, inc* repeat 6 times. (18 sts)

  • Round 4: *sc 2, inc* repeat 6 times. (24 sts)

  • Round 7: *sc 5, inc* repeat 6 times. (42 sts)

  • Rounds 8–15: sc in each st around. (42 sts)

Making and Attaching the Three Eyes:

  1. Center Eye: Using White yarn, magic ring with 6 sc. Next round, inc in each st (12 sts). Switch to Lime/Limelight, *sc 1, inc* (18 sts). Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Insert a large 18mm safety eye right in the center.

  2. Side Eyes (Make 2): Using White yarn, magic ring with 6 sc. Next round, inc in each st (12 sts). Fasten off. Insert a smaller 12mm safety eye in the center of each.

  3. Assembly: Sew all three eyes clustered closely together across the front upper portion of the head (Rounds 9–13), with the large eye dead center and the two smaller eyes tucked tightly against it on the left and right.

  4. Shaggy Hair Cap: Using Pistache yarn, work a separate small cap or surface stitches across the top of the head using loop-stitches (or French knots) to create that messy, shaggy hair look draping over the eyes.

🟢 Part 2: The Grumpy Mouth & Teeth

  • Round 16: *sc 5, dec* repeat 6 times. (36 sts)

  • Round 17: Fold horizontally to form the mouth opening: sc 18, ch 1, sc 18, ch 1.

  • Rounds 18–22: Work down the back and jaw to form the throat sleeve, decreasing gradually to 12 sts, then fasten off. Line the inside with pink fabric or yarn.

  • The Teeth: Using White yarn, chain 3, work a dc cluster or small triangles, and stitch multiple sharp, jagged teeth along the upper and lower inner rims of the mouth. Make sure to include one or two slightly crooked fangs sticking out over the lip!

🟢 Part 3: The Body, Crocodile Scales & Limbs

  • The Body Sleeve: Join Olive Green yarn at the base of the mouth opening and work downward in joined rounds to create a sleeve for your hand/arm (about 42 sts around).

  • Crocodile Scale Texture: To create the textured rows of scales along the lower belly, work crocodile stitch rows (or layered overlapping shell stitches) using alternating shades of Olive Green and Key Lime down the front torso.

  • The Striped Arms & Legs:

    • Make 2 arms and 2 legs by alternating stripes of Olive Green and Limelight in continuous tubular rounds.

    • Lightly stuff them, flatten the tops, and securely stitch the arms to the sides of the body and the legs to the bottom front.

Slip your hand inside, open and close the rigid mouth plate, and your three-eyed jealousy monster is ready for the classroom!

=====================================

Here is a complete crochet pattern to make your own little grumpy, jealous monster puppet, just like the fuzzy olive-green one the teacher is using in the classroom!

To get that ultra-fuzzy, slightly messy "lived-in" look shown in the image, we will use a bulky faux-fur or fuzzy yarn (like Lion Brand Go For Faux or Bernat Velvet) OR we can use standard acrylic and then brush it heavily with a wire pet slicker brush after it’s made to get it super fluffy.

Let's do it!

Pattern: Little Grumpy Jealousy Monster Puppet

Difficulty: Easy-Intermediate

Final Size: About 9–10 inches tall (fits on an adult hand).

Materials Needed:

  • Yarn:

    • Main Color (MC): Olive Green (Fuzzy/fluffy/chenille bulky yarn OR 2 strands of worsted weight acrylic green yarn held together—about 150 yds).

    • Accent Color 1: White (worsted weight, for eyes/teeth).

    • Accent Color 2: Black (worsted weight, for eyebrows/mouth details).

  • Hook:

    • Use Size H/8 (5.00mm) or Size I/9 (5.50mm) to make sure the fabric is tight (so your hand doesn’t show through!).

  • Notions:

    • (2) 15mm or 18mm Black safety eyes

    • Polyester fiberfill (stuffing)

    • Yarn needle

    • Stitch markers

    • (Optional) A wire dog brush/slicker brush to brush out standard yarn to make it fuzzy.

    • Felt (White and green) for eye backings to make them pop!

Pattern Notes

  • This is worked in continuous spirals unless otherwise stated. Use a stitch marker to keep track of your rows.

  • To avoid gaps, try to crochet tightly, especially with fuzzy yarn.

  • Abbreviations (US Terms):

    • ch = chain

    • sc = single crochet

    • inc = increase (2 sc in one stitch)

    • dec = invisible decrease (sc 2 together)

    • st(s) = stitch(es)

🟢 Part 1: The Head & Upper Mouth

We will work this puppet from the top down. The head and lower body are basically a sleeve for your arm, while the mouth remains un-stuffed so your fingers can open and close it!

Using Olive Green (MC)

  • Round 1: Start with a magic ring. 6 sc into ring. (6 sts)

  • Round 2: inc in each st around. (12 sts)

  • Round 3: *sc 1, inc* repeat 6 times. (18 sts)

  • Round 4: *sc 2, inc* repeat 6 times. (24 sts)

  • Round 5: *sc 3, inc* repeat 6 times. (30 sts)

  • Round 6: *sc 4, inc* repeat 6 times. (36 sts)

  • Round 7: *sc 5, inc* repeat 6 times. (42 sts)

  • Rounds 8–18: sc in each st around. (42 sts)

  • Note: Don’t fasten off yet! Let’s prepare the eyes before we go too far down.

Adding The Eyes, Eyelids & Brow (Do this now!)

The expressive, "grumpy/suspicious" eyes are what give this puppet its identity.

  1. Safety Eyes: Cut two half-moon shapes out of white felt. Press 15mm safety eyes through the white felt backings, then press them into the head between Rounds 11 and 12, placing them about 4 to 5 stitches apart. Put on the backings.

  2. Eyelids: Join MC green yarn on your hook. Chain 8. Fasten off, leaving a tail. Sew this little piece slanted over the top of each eye to make it look half-closed and suspicious/angry, like in the image.

  3. Eyebrows: Take a strand of Black yarn, and embroider a heavy, angry slant above both eyes. Keep them low over the eyes to create that signature frown.

🟢 Part 2: The Grumpy Mouth

To make the mouth move, we have to create two "half-bowls" that fold inward.

  • Round 19: *sc 5, dec* repeat 6 times. (36 sts)

  • Round 20: To make the inward fold for the back of the mouth, we will flatten this round: sc 18, ch 1 (this marks the corner hinge), sc 18, ch 1. Fold it horizontally.

  • Round 21: Now decrease further: *sc 4, dec* repeat around. (30 sts)

  • Round 22: *sc 3, dec* repeat around. (24 sts)

  • Round 23: *sc 2, dec* repeat around. (18 sts)

  • Round 24: *sc 1, dec* repeat around. (12 sts)

  • Round 25: dec all around. (6 sts)

  • Fasten off, weave in tail. You should now have an "open-pocket" shape where the mouth folds back.

  • To add the mouth lining, take some scrap dark green or black felt, cut a folded oval, and glue or stitch it to the inside fold to create a dark interior.

🟢 Part 3: The Body & Armhole

Let’s start the lower body/hand sleeve that goes down your wrist. Join your MC (Olive Green) yarn back at the rear Fold Line (Round 19/20) and pick up stitches around the lower open section of the bottom jaw.

  • Round 1: Join and sc 42 stitches around the open back and bottom jaw area. (42 sts)

  • Rounds 2–6: sc in each st around. (42 sts)

  • Round 7 (Arm holes!): sc 8, ch 4 (skip 4 stitches - this is for the left arm), sc 20, ch 4 (skip 4 stitches - for the right arm), sc 10. (42 sts)

  • Round 8: sc all around (crochet over the ch-4 spaces to secure). (42 sts)

  • Rounds 9–25: sc in each st around. (42 sts)

  • Round 26: To flare the bottom of the hand sleeve: *sc 6, inc* repeat 6 times. (48 sts)

  • Rounds 27–30: sc in each st around. (48 sts)

  • Fasten off, weave in all ends.

🟢 Part 4: Small Horns (Make 2)

These are the cute tiny horn/ear shapes on top of the head.

Using Olive Green (MC)

  • Round 1: Magic ring, 4 sc. (4 sts)

  • Round 2: *sc 1, inc* repeat twice. (6 sts)

  • Round 3: *sc 2, inc* repeat twice. (8 sts)

  • Round 4: sc in each st around. (8 sts)

  • Fasten off, leave a tail. Sew onto the top, outer sides of the head (above each eye).

🟢 Part 5: Grumpy Crossed Arms (Make 2)

This puppet has folded, tiny crossed arms.

Using Olive Green (MC)

  • Round 1: Magic ring, 6 sc. (6 sts)

  • Round 2: *sc 2, inc* repeat twice. (8 sts)

  • Rounds 3–12: sc in each st around. (8 sts)

  • Optional: Lightly stuff the arms.

  • Row 13: Flatten and sc through both thicknesses to close.

  • Insert and sew the arms into the skip-4 Arm Holes you made in the body on Round 7.

  • The Cross: Pin the arms across the front of the belly in a "crossed-arms" pose and stitch their hands together in the center to keep them folded and huffed!

🟢 Part 6: Finishing Touches

  1. The Angry Mouth Detail: Using Black yarn, embroider a thick frown shape around the top of the mouth opening to enhance the grumpy, pouty frown.

  2. Brushing It Out (If you used standard yarn): Take your wire dog brush (slicker brush) and scrub the puppet vigorously in all directions. The wire brush will pull the fibers of the acrylic yarn out, making the puppet incredibly soft, fluffy, and completely fuzzy—perfect for a jealousy monster!

Try it out, put your hand in, and let your grumpy little puppet complain about everything it's jealous of! Let me know if you need any adjustments to any of the parts! Let’s get stitching!
