Genesis 2:24-25
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
Last week we talked about how it was not good that man should be alone. God created Eve from Adam's rib. Eve had partaken of the fruit that God had said not to eat or touch. Eve offered to Adam, who also partook of the forbidden fruit. It was then that sin had entered into the world and everything changed for them.
Adam and Eve were naked in the Garden and did not know it. It was the first time they knew they were naked. So it was then that they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
God called for them, but they hid in fear of God and felt ashamed of themselves. They could not hide their sin from God, just as we cannot hide our sin from God today.
It was then that Adam blamed his wife for his disobedience to God. God did not accept that it was all Eves fault, though she should have obeyed her husband. Eve also blamed the serpent for her sin and God would not accept Eves excuses. God held each one accountable for the things that had taken place in the garden. The husband would have to labor harder to make a living, the wife was to submit under the authority of her husband and also go through pain in childbearing.
Genesis 3:10-19
And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.
And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
Things changed after the disobedience of Adam and Eve. If Eve wanted to please God with her life she would follow the plan that God had communicated to them. She would willingly submit herself under the authority of her husband. She would do this not only to obey God but also to reside under God's protection. Her husband was also there for her protection. The world became a dangerous place for them. The world became a dying place and a violent place.
They had to leave the perfect Garden that God had given them and could no longer eat of the tree of life. They were driven from the garden and angels stood guard over the tree of life.
Adam had to plant their own garden by the sweat of his brow and blisters on his hands and tiredness after a long hard day. This did not exist before sin.
God gave them the plan for pleasing Him, under new circumstances including the yearly sacrifices.
Adam would submit to God in the leading of His family and at his leading direct his family into the family structure God had laid out to them. God is pleased with us when we choose to follow His Word, his way. Adam was to lead his family and direct His family into the ways of God.
God wants to bless us as we obey Him and trust Him even though it may be hard for us to do. It's not always easy to put ourselves under the authority of someone else. To be humble in the sight of God, we must be willing to place ourselves under the authority he has placed over us. The man is to protect and love his family and provide under God's plan for the family. The wife and the children are to submit to the authority of the man as He submits to God and gives account to God for our souls. Children are to obey the mother in the home under the authority of the husband. Though all are equal in importance to God. God has given us a place to serve Him within the family structure.
The Bible teaches the husband and wife to submit to one to another. There are times that the wife protects her husband, that's why the Bible teaches us to submit one to another. The Bible teaches us to submit to the authorities in our lives. Though the wife is not an authority over the man in the family, He at times submits to her advice because He needs her to take that role under certain circumstances. (An example would be a sick husband or a very tired one.)
Your parents are given authority over you, they are there to protect and teach you. To obey your parents and not grieve their hearts brings joy to God. God blesses children who bless their parents, even in their old age.
Hebrews 13:17
Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
1Peter 5:5
Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
We know sometimes there are troubles in families- that are very, very difficult, the bible speaks of these kinds of situations. I had some difficult things happen in my childhood, I could of became bitter about them, though I didn't live perfectly, I continued to cry out to God to change me and to help me do what's right. I could of become bitter over some things. I could even become bitter over some things today, but rather, by the grace of God, choose to seek God and His grace.
Though none are perfect and we have had bad days, we just continue and ask God to help us to do better. Stay in the Word of God, love him and obey him. Our number one goal as Christians is to love and please God with our lives. If we love God we will love others in both action and word, especially between husband, wife and children. If we love God we will not be too prideful to follow his plan, his way.
If we have fallen short as Christians, in these things, we must get back up, dust off discouragement. Move forward into new hope and trust God all over again. We can have renewed faith and renewed strength knowing we are forgiven of our failures and can begin again.
Let us hold ourselves accountable unto God. To help us through our difficulties and know that our goals are much bigger than this world.
Let us seek God today and pray,
Father God, We come to you and ask you to help us obey the authorities over us with joy and with forgiveness in humbleness. Help us each one to respect and love them for Christ sake. Father you know our difficulties and our hardships, help us to continue in your joy knowing that you work through our problems to make us and mold us into the person you want us to become. Help us to love and to bring joy to those you have put over us. I pray these things in the name of Christ Jesus amen.
