Lesson 1: The Night Watchman
Character Trait: Vigilance (Watchfulness)
KJV Scripture: "Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation." (Mark 14:38)
The Story of Barnaby the Great Horned Owl
As the golden sun dipped below the horizon and the other birds of the forest tucked their heads under their wings to sleep, Barnaby the Great Horned Owl was just beginning his day. While the blue jay and the robin closed their eyes, Barnaby’s large, amber eyes flew wide open.
Barnaby was a Watchman.
He did not fly aimlessly. He perched on the highest branch of the Old Oak tree, his body perfectly still. To a casual observer, he might have looked like he was daydreaming, but Barnaby was practicing vigilance. His tufted ears were swept back, catching every tiny rustle in the leaves below. His eyes were fixed, searching for any movement that didn't belong in the peaceful night forest.
In the Bible, we are told to be like Barnaby. The world can be a dark place, and it is easy to "fall asleep" spiritually—to stop paying attention to our choices or to forget that God is watching over us.
One night, a sly fox tried to creep toward the nest of a sleeping family of quails. Because Barnaby was vigilant, he saw the danger long before the quails did. With a sharp "Hoo-hoo!" and a sweep of his great wings, he alerted the forest. The danger was avoided because someone was awake, alert, and standing guard.
Character Lesson
Being vigilant means:
Staying Awake: Not letting our hearts become lazy or bored with doing what is right.
Guarding the Door: Watching what enters our eyes and ears (what we watch and listen to).
Prayer: Keeping our "spiritual eyes" open by talking to God throughout the day.
Think about it: If the owl decided to sleep whenever he wanted, the forest would lose its watchman. When we decide to stop being careful about our character, we leave ourselves open to making wrong choices.
KJV Memory Verse:
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour." — 1 Peter 5:8
