Lesson 4: Fixed Eyes & Single-Mindedness
The Owl Trait: An owl cannot move its eyes inside their sockets like we can. To see something else, the owl must turn its entire head. This gives the owl "tunnel vision" or a total, unwavering focus on what is in front of it.
Character Trait: Single-Mindedness (Focusing on Jesus) KJV Scripture: "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross..." — Hebrews 12:2
The Story: Obadiah’s Steady Gaze
In the tall pines lived Obadiah the Barn Owl. Obadiah was famous for his stillness. While other birds would flutter their wings and look back and forth at every rustling leaf, Obadiah would sit like a statue.
God designed Obadiah with large, beautiful eyes that are fixed in place. Because he cannot move his eyes, he has to turn his whole head to look at his goal. This means when Obadiah is looking at something, he is looking with his whole heart and his whole head. He isn't easily distracted by the things happening off to the side.
Our walk with God is much like Obadiah's flight. The world is full of "side-distractions"—worries, noise, and things that try to pull us away from the path. But Hebrews 12:2 tells us to keep our eyes "fixed" on Jesus. If we turn our whole hearts toward Him, just like Obadiah turns his head, we won't be moved by the storms around us. We are "single-minded," keeping our gaze on the Author of our faith.
Character Lesson
Unwavering Focus: Don't let your eyes wander to the left or the right. Keep your heart pointed toward the Word.
Whole-Heartedness: Like the owl turning its entire head, we should serve God with our whole being, not just a part of us.
Endurance: Because the owl stays focused, it reaches its goal. When we stay focused on Jesus, He gives us the strength to finish our race.
KJV Memory Verse: "Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee." — Proverbs 4:25
