Lesson 6: The Wise Reputation

Lesson 6: The Wise Reputation

The Owl Trait: Since ancient times, the owl has been called "the wise old owl." This reputation comes from its calm demeanor, its large, thoughtful eyes, and the way it sits in quiet contemplation rather than frantic activity. It doesn't waste words; it watches and learns.

Character Trait: True Wisdom vs. Worldly Wisdom KJV Scripture: "But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy."James 3:17

The Story: Solomon’s Silver Feathers

In the high hollow of an oak tree lived Solomon the Eurasian Eagle-Owl. Solomon was the oldest bird in the forest, and he had a "wise reputation." Animals came from miles around to sit at the foot of his tree when they were troubled.

One day, a young bluejay came to him, boasting about how "smart" he was because he knew where all the best seeds were hidden and how to trick the other birds. Solomon looked down with his amber eyes and spoke softly. "That is worldly wisdom," Solomon said. "It is clever, but it is loud and selfish. True wisdom—the kind that comes from the Creator—doesn't brag. It is pure and peaceable."

Solomon explained that just as an owl's feathers are designed to make its flight silent so it can hear better, true wisdom makes our lives "quiet" so we can serve others better. Being wise isn't about knowing the most facts; it’s about having a "gentle spirit" and being "full of mercy." When we act with the wisdom of James 3:17, we don't just look wise like an owl—we reflect the very heart of God.

Character Lesson

  • First Pure: True wisdom starts with a clean heart before God.

  • Peaceable & Gentle: If "wisdom" makes us a bully or a know-it-all, it isn't from God. True wisdom brings peace to a room.

  • Good Fruits: We know we are growing in wisdom when our lives start producing "good fruits"—kindness, mercy, and honesty.

KJV Memory Verse: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding."Proverbs 9:10
